Effectiveness of High-Damping Rubber (HDR) Damper and Tuned Mass—HDR Damper in Suppressing Stay-Cable Vibration

High-damping rubber (HDR) dampers have the advantages of convenience for various shapes pressure blocks, aesthetic installation, easy maintenance, temperature stability, etc.; thus, they present good application prospects in vibration reduction stay cables. Hence, a model taut cable equipped with two types HDR damper—i.e., damper and tuned mass–high-damping (TM-HDR-D)—is established herein. Then, based on this theoretical model, effect each acting alone combination cable’s additional modal damping is studied. Finally, an actual cable-stayed bridge used to study effectiveness practical engineering. The results show that, when TM-HDR-D has small mass, total approximates superposition respective effects dampers. mainly depends its stiffness installation position; meanwhile, contribution related tuning frequency position. In engineering, smaller mass can make up lack enhancement cable-end damper.
